Istabitha's Weyr

Ebony

Female, age 17

Rank/Craft: Holdbred Spy crafter

Location: Blackstone Weyr (originally Alabaster Hold)

Relatives/Family: has two brothers, Sable and Raven, neither of whom she likes

Dragon if any: Blue Ivith impressed at Istabitha's Weyr

Physical Description: 5'6", 130, kind of chunky but very pretty to look at. Deeply brown skin, with hair that is dyed blue (yes, blue!) on top and fades into the black at the back. Her hair is loose afro, with flat cut on the top and left curly at her shoulders. Her eyes are shockingly blue. Her face is strong and round, with widely spaced eyes and a perfect wide nose. She has a bit of an addiction to smoking some of the local plant life, so her voice is already a little scratchy, but it is deep and husky. She wears formal outfits of browns mostly.

Emotional/Mental Description: lusty and strong willed, Ebony goes through life at full tilt, stopping only rarely to smell the flowers. Pick them, get on with it, roll them up and burn them... Then, enjoy the afternoon. She is only occasionally quite serious, but when she is depended upon, by anyone, she usually comes through. Quick with her work, whatever she is doing gets done on time. She knows who to trust and who to avoid, and she is very sarcastic.

Skills: most Hold style things including sewing and such, but she absolutely hates it and leaves it to anyone else. Her forte is in the spy craft established by Engell at the Alabaster hold of her birth. She watches and listens in on nearly anyone, always casual even if she is found out. She rarely gets into trouble for her actions, but it is not really known why not. She has a knack for finding her favorite smokable plants.

History: Born in Alabaster, and with the expectations that she would be sent out to another area to spy. She lives up to every expectation. She was sent to Dawnlight first, at the age of 14, but she was soon Searched and given permission to remain in the Weyr. Her brothers have not been Searched, but they were sent along with her in the hopes of throwing off the scent of Alabaster in another Hold's courts. Once she got to Blackstone, she and H'lis hit it off immediately, and she is still a close friend of his.

Notes and Special Information: Ebony is highly empathic but she may very well stunt her mental abilities by smoking them away. If she Impresses, any dragon she has will put a stop to that silly habit.Pets/Hobbies/Posessions: Ebony has no pets, except if you count Spring and H'lis. Her hobbies are smoking, playing cards, smoking, spying, and smoking.

"Get out of the rain you dimglow!" Ebony yelled to her friend Spring. When the blond haired rider wouldn't obey the dark skinned woman's command, she looked about angrily and flicked the small cigarette away and stomped out to get her.

"You made me lose count," Spring said, eyes a bit glazed over.

She is very ... high... Ebony, I want you to stop giving my rider those ... things.

"These?" Ebony yelled at the green dragon. "She's gotten the last one too wet to smoke, anyway!"

The pair finally dried off in the warmth of Blackstone's forced-air heating. Clever things like that kept Ebony happy. It made the drudges work easier, and everyone was happier this way.

Spring was awfully happy. But then again, that was because she'd been counting hailstones and had laughed very hard at the thought that she reached numbers she didn't know. Even Ebony cocked an eyebrow at that, and then sent the rider off to sleep it off. Too much of a good thing, she reasoned.

Finally, a pair of dragons arrived to the weyr, and because Ebony was always around H'lis and Spring and W'ick and them, she knew who they were and why they were there. The weyrling dragon Faloritoth had come to get a bit of training in the off season from Sapphire weyr, his birthplace. Ebony admired the black dragon, the same way she would admire H'lis and perhaps W'ick. The dragon was sexy, dark and sleek.

But it was the white Surrith who snugged his pale head down near the woman and bespoke.

Why is your hair like that? He asked.

"Why is yours like this?" She scratched at his headknob and the Surrith purred with delight.

You were not born that way! Today we saw two humans with no hair at all! They were--

"Two, my color?" She indicated her skin as opposed to T'ran or even Sab're's.

Yes, that color. We will be bringing them to Istabitha's weyr to stand on the sands. They seemed quite happy about it.

Surrith wondered why the wonderful scratching stopped, and Ebony stomped over to his rider to hash things out. Then, when she seemed satisfied with the results, he rested his head practically on her lap, while she grinned to herself.

"No brothers of mine are going to one-up me on the sands..." she said to Surrith, "even though I can't believe they're searched. And by you. Traitor..." But Surrith didn't know what that meant, and didn't hardly care, either.

It was a fast, strange hatching. Ebony had barely had time to put on her robe and ran down the hall to the sands, followed by her brothers, before the hatching started. The brown, three blues, bronze and several greens that hatched were very nice indeed. But Ebony had a strange, urgent sensation in her gut which wouldn't go away.

Until she saw three eggs hatch at once: two browns and a blue. The little blue made a total bee line right for Ebony. He knew! He knew what it was like to challenge the big boys and --

I made it before they did! I told them I could do it, but they didn't believe me! I sure showed them, didn't I!?

Eony laughed and said, with a pleasantly annoying grin on her face at her brothers, "Of course you did. And from now on, we know who's best, don't we Ivith?"

The browns made the attempt to be cool about having lost the race to impress, but Ivith and Ebony simply wandered off the sands with their heads held high, blue both of them!

The way Ivith flew reminded Ebony of her more free days at Dawnlight.

You will show me this place soon, won't you?

"Of course I will," Ebony told her pretty blue.

But it is not a weyr. Where will we have our home?

"That's at Blackstone, my dear. But we won't be going there for another Turn or more!"

That is a long time?

Ebony sighed. "Yes, it's about as long as you've been with me."

So it is "forever"!

"He's going to make a fine addition to the Wing, Ebony." Shard said. "They need you soon."

So long as I get to fly high and far, I'll like it there!

"You will, Ivith! It's a good wing to be with, the Long Wing of the Law is right where you belong."

Ebony looked oddly at the weyrleader.

"But I was talking about the Cherry wing, Shard."

"The... The what?"

"Don't tell me you didn't know of the wing in your own Protectorate?!"

There are many blues and browns in it! Well, not many... Just a couple yet...

"Or so we've heard," Ebony said, and then nudged Ivith with her boot. Hush, she bespoke.

"So... Well, I suppose that if we can have an all guy wing there ought to be the same thing... I thought that was the Valley wing."

"Nope," Ebony said, and then grinned broadly. "But I'm slated to fly in the Spy wing too, sweet. So don't worry, they won't be sorry they have another blue rider."

"Don't call it the Spy wing," Shard said, with a grin that said he was kidding, "they don't like it."
