K'ree - written around 2001

Kyree is one of Lake's relatives, and lives around the same cothold. They often hunt together, and have formed quite a solid friendship. Kyree is a more aggressive hunter, however, prefering to scout ahead and occasionally take down a bigger, more dangerous prey animal.

In this manner, of course, Kyree has acquired a number of interesting scars and markings... She is not afraid of getting Threadscore, knowing that pain keeps you aware of life.

And she intends to live her life to the fullest.

Kyree prefers to remain illiterate, though she will still have the same chances to attend harpers lessons while in a Weyr. She wants to keep her concentration where it belongs: on a dragon.

She does know that she will have to study wing formations and marching orders, but those are physical things she understands well already. Kyree is not stupid, and could learn like anyone else.

Kyree hopes to ride a brown dragon, knowing that this is a very masculine thing, but she has the strong will and attitude which might suit one. If she does impress a male dragon, she will elide her name to K'ree, similar to the way T'ver has shortened hers.

** 2021: Note that she and N'ai have several children together, including Ang'eh who was fostered, and his fraternal twin Kengari, who they did raise in the Weyr together

Kyree was wandering about near the edge of the woodland hold, not really hunting and not really working... when she heard the sound of great wings flapping. It had to be a dragon, they passed over this area frequently. So frequently in fact that the wild wherries below in the glen nearby didn't even flinch when it...

Landed! A blue dragon, with a somewhat familiar yellow-skinned and white haired man dropping from his shoulder, landed down near the woods.

"Heyo," called out A'rd. "Kyree, is it?"

"How... did you know me? I mean, how did you know I was here?"

"The Eden's Glade people told me," A'rd said. "But it was Trelerth who sniffed you out."

"He's cute," Kyree laughed, and Trelerth nudged her, almost bowling her over, in order to get a good eyeridge scratch.

She is good for the clutch, my friend.

"Trelerth informs me that you'd be a good candidate on Aneris' sands. That's where he was from, you know. He knows those sands well."

"I... sands... you mean... Oh!" Kyree suddenly grinned and gave Trelerth that good scratching he'd been wanting. "In that case, can we get back to the cothold and let me get my things? When is this clutch supposed to hatch?"

A'rd thought at his dragon for a moment, who bespoke the clutch's sire and dam. "Reamith and Suscoth, green and brown, they've got ten eggs, and you're one of the earlier candidates. So it might be a few weeks yet. It would let you get some hunting in, and some weyrling practice."

Kyree nodded, and they mounted up on to Trelerth. She was entranced by the way they flew, clearly admiring the sturdy blue wings.

"I can't wait, A'rd," she said, "I just can't wait!"

After their arrival at Aneris Weyr, Kyree did have to wait. But she did so with others who had come from far and wide to experience a hatching, like herself.

She went to the weyrling classes, and saw that there was even Talony there, he was a fine example of Dawnlight's better elements. They hung out together quite often, and discussed their hunting techniques, and sword play and who they thought would impress what. Then, in the middle of the night several sevendays later, the hatching began!

They both found themselves in their uncomfortable but warm white candidates' gowns, and moved out onto the sands to wait for the hatching to commence.

The first egg was a blue, a very fine one at that. Then, another! Two blues in a row. Finally a bronze breaks shell and the sands start to come alive. A brown and green break open at once, and the green runs to one of the girls. The brown however locates himself a fine young wanderer man whom Kyree had noticed often in their classes, Norai. Then...

A strange buzzing sensation filled Kyree's head. She looked around, but saw no bug or fire lizard or anything which might be making that sound. It wasn't truly annoying, but it was getting louder all the time!

The next egg which broke open was a blue, one which made his way to the boys, but seemed to disdain them for looking at the girls. Then... Kyree had to just walk out and hold her hands down to the dragonet. "I'm so glad you chose me, Lerinth," she said.

I am happy too! You are the best one on the sands, did you know that? Now, feed me! And it would be good for a scratch, too!

Kyree laughed, as she led the blue away from the sands!

Do you think you could scratch a little higher up?

"Do you think you could learn to do it yourself, you great blue lummox?" K'ree laughed. "I'm standing as tall as I can get. If you want that itch scratched, you've got to come down a little for me."

Yes! I will... Oh, there. It's a good place there.

Lerinth was never going to be a very bright dragon, was he. K'ree knew this, but she was very happy with him. Always, his behavior reminded her of a child, open and willing and eager. He always loved their moments of privacy, too, though.

It was when they could just relax, and he could ask any question under the moons and she would be able to answer him.

When will we fight Thread? He asked.

"Soon, my love. Soon."

"This," K'ree said, "is SO superior!"

The wind whipped around her face, and made her feel so alive! Upon Lerinth's narrow neck she laughed. The skies were dropping with silvery Thread, and in their first few minutes in the wing formation, Lerinth blasted away so much of a big glob of it that it made them both feel great!

This is what we were meant to do, my rider! I cannot think of anything better!

"Just don't get hit! Right! Dive!" On her commands, the blue dropped his right wing and they were missed by another tendril of Thread as it wound down. They circled it, and he blasted flames at it until it was less than ash.

That's the way! Good going Lerith! Now, are you tired?

Not too tired to get this last one, but then we should go in. Most of the greens have already gone and been replaced. Then it is our turn.

He swooped around again and gained altitude until they were above a narrow column of Thread, and he took it out with the last of his Firestone.

Now I am done for the day. Do you ever wish that I was able to do more?

"We could paint you bronze or brown but you're always going to be my special lifemate, Lerinth! No brown is better than you!"
