BACK

Pauskema won his flight at Nidus Avengaea, producing a variety of very colorful and very pretty offspring!

When he got back to Paniya, he was

An insufferable gloat

very proud of himself indeed! There were eight lovely hatchlings, and he made sure they went off with the right bonds or sponsors. Pauskema came back to the island with his head held high

And hasn't stopped talking about it since

because so many of them were touched with his lovely feather-markings.

Tani and Zakurath were impressed with how he wooed the female, and oohed and ahhed about each of the

little chameleon monstrosities

hatchlings that he described. It took many weeks before Pauskema was

Done gloating! hardly!

"VAJRATH!" Ilya bellowed, glaring at the pale bronze with his hands suddenly tightening on Tani's shoulders making her wince.

"Why did you have to teach him to read, anyway?" Tani asked with a smirk. The bronze had been reading over Tani's shoulder as she jotted down memories of the events in her life. She'd filled several books worth of them already, starting from her childhood and running all the way until now. Pauskema was outside sunbathing and ignoring Vaj's protests. It had been more than two years since he came home and he'd really never stopped gloating about the event. According to Vaj anyway.

The bronze flew off, presumably to blow off some steam and maybe burn up some ants or rampage plants in the meantime.

"You know, time has a way of acting funny around here," Tani said oddly a moment after she closed her book. She looked at Ilya, bright green eyes filled with wonder. "Because I'm positive I remember something that hasn't happened yet. At least, I'm sure it can't have. It's only two years."

"Well," Ilya said, "we're time travellers, how wonky can it get?"

"Pauskema will want to know..."

***

Indeed he did want to know. For what Tani had just 'recalled' (as she was adept at a bit of prophesy now and again) was that in a slightly future time, at a Nexus dragonry hosting many interesting flights, one of Pauskema's grandchildren had just had a clutch! He'd never even seen any of that generation, but he was positive that they'd be gorgeous.

Because it was his way, Pauskema abruptly picked up and vanished - heading to Kalyturn's Hybridization center and looking around to see the sights.

If there was something this dragon loved more than attention, it would be doting his own upon the dragons that were related to himself. He saw in them a beauty that perhaps even Vajrath could understand. Vaj had sired lovely Pernese children. But Pauskema... had more than that. The sire of his great grandchildren was colorful but... Quite odd. Not like other dragons, that was certain... Yet he trusted his granddaughter's choice - or if it was really her choice? Didn't much matter.

Pauskema made himself concentrate on the clutch, because... well, there were some beautiful female dragons around, and he'd already heard that they simply were not accepting new fliers at that time.

Besides, he chuckled to himself in that same gloating manner that infuriated Vaj, he was already well represented, apparently, so there was little need for him here.

But what was this? The call was going out for sponsors or bonds for this clutch. There were others, but he was focused on these - he could certainly show a young dragon how to make a name for itself in the world, couldn't he! That, and wouldn't Vaj be jealous...

***

He might be jealous, Pauskema thought, but it'd be more fun to see how this ornery great-grand-daughter of his would 'get along' with the bronze. She was picky, hard to predict, and all energy. Not nervous, no, more like wound up and ready for anything - and if things didn't go her way, boyoboy, look out.

"Greatgrandfather?" Sheng asked, "why do you poke at the bronze?"

He's big, and bronze. There are little other reasons, my dear.

"Oh." She flew off, barely able to do so since she'd hardly fledged yet when they'd gotten home to the Isle. Before she encountered the great bronze, however, Sheng noticed a pale colored green dragoness watching her, and knew this must be the Zakurath that Pauskema mentioned. The chameleon dropped into the green's view, and instantly Zakurath was on her feet excitedly.

Oh you've come back, with Pauskema! How lovely! Zakurath said, but Sheng was already looking past the pretty green and beyond to the grazing lands and the cliffs.

"Yes, he's mentioned you. Where is the food?"

This didn't seem to faze the green, and for the moment Sheng kept her mouth shut about what she thought that meant. Most likely it meant that the green was just that - simple, and built for small things. Sheng on the other hand was going to be nearly twice the size of the light green, and besides her hide changed color and was marked! What could be better?

"Your mate is also just... one color?" Sheng prodded when Zakurath joined her at a feeding pen.

Yes, most of our breed are! But you're beautiful, and Pauskema's horns and little-wings suit you. Zakurath went on blissfully unaware of how little the color-shifter cared... Though there was something to be said about getting complimented so often!
