New Dark Moon Weyrhold |
Alyona was the fifth of six children, a healthy family in a thriving far-north community protected by Dragonhope Weyr. Her parents were both well-educated, and they insisted upon their children all learning something to keep their very active minds busy. Alyona was not a very physical girl, unlike her eldest sister who trained in glasscraft. So she stayed indoors and enjoyed learning about numbers, science and the like. As a girl however she was also expected to make a wife for some young Lord sooner or later, and everyone knew that Ladies needed to do certain things: sewing, cleaning, cooking... she took well to pretty embroidery and expert repairs on clothing. Her family was wealthy, but not so concerned about having their youngest girl searched. When she was 14 and her younger brother 11, they were both Searched. However, Yelten was far too young to Stand, and thus it was Alyona who left the Hold. Alyona's spirit was far from crushed when she stood on Dragonhope's sands and was not chosen by a dragon. She felt she wasn't ready then, and knew that she'd need to be stronger in body and mind in order to prove herself to a dragon. In another year, spent at the Weyr learning and helping out, she was informed of a clutch at Dark Moon Weyrhold. There, she stood, and there... Her hopes were finally realized! Several dragons had hatched, a lovely blue first. Some looked as though they didn't want to find their bond yet, grooming or laying exhausted on the hot sands. One girl impressed a green, a blue still wandering... The green, not to be outdone, hissed at the blue as she trotted past the boys and thumped a girl with her muzzle, hard. Alyona fell on her backside, but before she could pick herself up she was greeted by a gentle voice. I am Eaeth, and I am hungry. Let's get out of here, I hate it. "Well, Eaeth, I think there's food nearby, let's find out!" Alyona was overjoyed, and glad to get off the hot sands too. She wrote to her parents immediately, and specifically to Yelten - because some day soon he'd also be out there on the sands, he'd be best off knowing exactly what it meant to impress, and what needed to be done when you did! Since she was going to be learning more and more, and still wanted to send many letters, Alyona decided to get a flitter - waiting out by the beaches while little Eaeth flapped her wings in the water to get strong, she hunted around. A big gold flit pretty clearly had a nest up in a bunch of rocks, so she waited until the flitter was away hunting, and climbed carefully up. She snatched an egg before the gold returned, and helped it hatch within a sevenday. A lovely brown came from it, which she named Driftwood. With him trained up, she could send as many letters as she could write!
