Aulda and Gold Zeadenath

Aulda was born on a large island in a bustling community, where she was essentially ignored. Her father's death shortly after the birth of her youngest brother caused a huge ripple in her family, and all but two of the youngest children were sent away to live with other people. This was completely okay with Aulda, as she was getting tired of the crowding in her House. Though she was only eight at the time, Aulda had a good clear image of what she'd be doing as an adult. She wanted to become a parchment maker, her foster parents profession. The work was fairly hard, but she could easily concentrate on it. Pressing water from pulp was messy but that gave her the excuse to take long baths later.

It was when her eldest brother, now a minor house lordling by marriage to a plain looking girl in a neighboring township, sent her a gift that her world fell apart. Thinking that she liked her privacy but knowing that she loved to keep up with things, he sent her a small spyglass - ostensibly to look in on distant neighbors and check up on people without having to go visit. At first that was a terrific gift! Aulda sent letters thanking him almost every week.

And then she learned that glass was not entirely her friend. In its collapsed form the spyglass was only a finger-length, but its lens was quite large, bigger than you could grip thumb and middle finger around. On a day when everyone was at a market, Aulda had left the glass in its typical place on her desk. But a cart had bumped into the house, causing it to shake just enough to drop the lens onto its side. Facing the western window, the lens caught the light of the afternoon sun...

Aulda and her foster parents both survived the blaze because they were outside. But their whole house - and their workshop - was destroyed. Aulda knew immediately that it was the spyglass to blame, hadn't she seen something glinting brightly in her window when she happened to glance back at it from the street some blocks below? With a great tightness in her stomach and throat, Aulda confessed what she thought had happened... her foster parents were patient people, but their tolerance for having their whole life's work go up in smoke was obviously too much for them to handle. They would have a hard enough time rebuilding without her sobbing and apologizing constantly to them.

They were not hard hearted though, and far from simply refusing to have her continue to live with them, they found another - competing - paper loom which needed someone to pick up the extra work they would get from this disaster. Aulda worked in silence, never sending another letter to her brother, beyond the one which she told him of the fire. She shunned going out in the light, almost blaming the sun along with her spyglass for the disaster.

By the time she was just past seventeen turns old it was clear that Aulda wouldn't make a good wife for the paper master's son, or even for some random lordling. She'd withdrawn severely and been sullen for so long, the fire happened when she was fourteen. But there did come a day when dragons from a northern weyr arrived, seeking out new candidates. One of them stopped near the young woman, the blue dragon sniffing at her for a very long time indeed.

Searched, and suddenly happy to be away from the island where she'd grown up, Aulda was in for a nasty shock - this Dragonhope weyr was so cold! But she learned it was also halfway dark during the autumn - and almost completely dark during winter! Perhaps there would be something to going back into the sunlight during summer, when they told her the sun barely set. But first, they trained her for the hard work of living in a dragonry. She was able to do work that most commoners didn't understand, and the instructors that she was passed between commented that she learned very quickly. She was adept at record keeping, good with words, though not a quick writer she would not be recording hatchings - that was far too fast for her hand, she was better at copying and passing out information to others.

She stood once, at Dragonhope's sands, but did not impress. She wasn't devistated, while there was a sadness that all candidates held when they were refused, Aulda's passed quickly with the work she was doing around the Weyr. She enjoyed writing down the cook's recipies, as the woman became older and more addled she'd insisted on having her work preserved somehow.

Then came the call that another weyr, once thought dead, was in need of candiates. White River weyr, known for its hardy, stocky dragons. Aulda and several others, searched variously from a few hours before they left back to years ago, were brought together and sent on the backs of three browns. Aulda was prepared this time for another rejection, but to her great delight, a gold (one of several, these sands were so blessed!) came to her side.

Zeadenath was her name, proud and large, but she was sensitive to Aulda's needs too. You will never be alone with me around, she bespoke. Aulda laughed.

"I don't need to be away from you, Zeadenath, not ever!"
