Fenstan / F'stan and bronze Vesulth Fenstan was devoted to his music. Devoted perhaps is a word on the lighter side of his obsession. From the moment he was three and heard his first flute played by a harper that came through his father's hold, he was consumed with the sounds it could make. He fashioned himself his own primative flute and began testing himself on it. His father destroyed it. And the next, and three more. One thing was clear however: every time he had to take a flute away, it had been more complicated than the last. Until the time that Fenstan was ten, and insisted that he be let out of the Hold and join as an apprentice Harper in the nearby guild. At first his father was adamant he remain. However, it was clear that his mother's blood ran strong and true in this son of a Holder and Guild mistress. Fenstan's father had married a proper Lady, one who remained silent and gave him two more sons and never complained that her husband's ire was always directed at the boy who had such genius. It was at her soothing suggestion that the boy would be best off where he would no longer disrupt things in the Hold, that allowed Fenstan to finally leave. His mother, however, had been wondering why the boy hadn't been given to her in the first place. Bastard sons - even if they were the first son of the Holder - rarely were given anything more than a swift kick out the door. Fenstan remained with his mother, then, from the age of ten until he was searched. She had also married, and had a girl and another son with the harper - neither of them were nearly so talented as Fenstan. Though he'd come in relatively late to train, Fenstan's raw talent brought him from a minor apprenticeship into journeyman status within three years. That he'd fashioned five flutes out of nothing but nearby materials, and actually reinvented various tools and valves for it, impressed the Masters the most. In the twilight hours, Fenstan would supply beautiful haunting melodies for the singers to learn. When the days were hottest, he would rarely come out during the daytime. It was overwhelmingly warm where the guild was, and it was a wonder anyone got anything done at all. But when the sun set and things cooled down a bit, Fenstan would pursue every moment to advance himself. Not just in playing and making instruments, but in reading and writing. He wrote to his father once or twice, but received nothing in return. It would have been a sixteenth birthday present, to have his Mastery awarded. But the dragon riders changed all that. To the great and loud protests of the Masters of the guild, a pair of search riders came from Dragonhope weyr, and Searched several of the young harpers. Fenstan was among those, stunned. Abruptly, he was given the knots of a Master, and a stipend from the guild that as long as he could prove that he was still worthy of his status, he could instruct and take apprentices at their expense. When he was brought to Dragonhope, he reveled in the chilly days, and the long, long nights. He didn't have to worry so much about the wood of his instruments flexing and breaking in the heat. He wasn't sure quite what to make of all the girls - he'd been concentrating so much on his work that he barely even saw them as intriguing. Until he reached the weyr... When Fenstan was brought to a weyr to stand, it was a strong bronze named Vesulth that came to him. A bronze! A bronze rider, and a Master harper? Before he was even sixteen? Well, F'stan has not let that go to his head. He is a dedicated rider as well as a harper of great degree. He has no intentions of becoming a leader, however. Too much of his time is taken up in fighting Thread already, in his opinion. Because he's attractive and charismatic, and learned in the ways of communication, Dragonhope's leaders allow him to pick up and transfer important people to and from their Weyr. Vesulth is fine with that, he's not a large bronze but he is healthy and swift in the air. They go out and get the job done, when fighting, and have yet to be hit by any thread. They have a knack for Search riding, and to that end F'stan and Vesulth are often sent to crafthalls where they are more easily welcomed due to F'stan's rank in the Craft.
