As a weyrbrat, Halvest was known all around as a fun guy to be with. He knew all the right games and stories, his mother taught him many interesting facts while she was going over records to re-scribe them. He was never bookish himself though, far more interested in the world around him. Particularly when there were interesting clouds, or dragons flying overhead. That meant that he was quite often staring into the sky, rather than mucking out a weyr, or carrying buckets to the goat pens. But, the work mostly got done... mostly. It was a shame that he didn't show any artistic ability, because his imagination was quite strong. It surprised no one that when the gypsies came, he was absolutely entranced with them. For several years, every Spring, this troupe would come by the weyr, and he along with many others would enjoy their dances and stories, rewarding them with marks and with gifts. From them, he learned a few things - how to juggle, sleight of hand, a few dances that became popular at Weyrs that they had visited, and intriguingly he practiced with a couple of the younger boys, with hand to hand fighting arts. Because he wasn't a big child, they always underestimated him but he was always able to keep up. This skill kept him healthy, kept him on his toes, and for years he sparred with others in the weyr for sport. As he grew into his teen years, however, Halvest knew he wasn't going to be any kind of 'catch' for a girl. Even the drudge girls rolled their eyes or slunk away if he asked to dance with them. It wasn't that they thought he was ugly or unkind, only that his inactivity almost always led to them being punished for doing nothing themselves! He found out that it was one of his very own sparring partners that kept asserting this to the drudges, since they would often be found with him instead, doing ... nothing. Halvest was angry, but the only retrobution he felt necessary was to exclude that boy from any of his activities from then on. When a search rider arrived from another weyr, asking for spare candidates for their massive clutch... Halvest found himself among one or two others that were easily spared. He knew it wasn't personal, really, but they wanted to make sure that any layabouts were sent packing. Halvest knew that once he was standing as a Candidate, his life would have to pick up in pace a bit. Only when they arrived did he understand how quickly he would have to adjust: the clutch was actually hatching! A bright, easily distracted green stumbled upon him as she was snuffling in the sands around the edges. Almost by accident, their eyes met. Dheth was her name, and she enjoyed staring up at the clouds as much as H'vest did. Neither of them were particularly excited about flying against Thread, but given that the green was an apt flier, and H'vest good enough at getting her where she was needed, they secured a spot in the second flier wing, replacing the exhausted first-run blues and greens. So far, they've been lucky and have not had any accidents. |
