She came to the Weyr with crafted items and dancing, stayed long enough to bed a red-rider, and returned two years later with a child with the same brilliant red hair as his father. This child was named Imeden, and was highly responsive to the dragons around him. His three older siblings, a girl and two boys, all enjoyed his company and were certainly happy to have him around. And then the sickness came, killing so many in the Weyr that it was forced to abandon the land and those left healthy enough went their separate ways. Imeden was only four turns old, and had lost everyone in the world. He was sent down into a safe Hold, a busy place with more people than he'd ever seen, and was kept by a candlemaker and his wife. Close to ten years later, the restless Imeden had run away from home twice, and very nearly killed himself falling into a deep well. The family canine came to his aid, even though by that time he had wondered whether it was worth going back home. The blasted dog bit through his hand trying to drag him up to the top of the well. Though he respected his foster-parents, they were not the kind of people who could keep the son of a gypsy and a dragonrider occupied for long. Thus he wandered out, with a pack and a spear, and trod in his mother's footsteps though he never knew it. When he reached another Hold, it was during a gather. That was fortunate, because there was a whole wing of dragons there, including two search riders. They discovered his history easily, for though the weyr had died, its records had not, and as the son of a rider was due some amount of respect. They brought him to Dragonhope, and then to Blue Mountain Aurie where he impressed. The richly dark-toned bronze was named Apiofoth, and was never afraid to speak what was on his mind - or his rider's. As a trusted member of a fighting wing, I'den learned to handle a sword in addition to his spear, and helped teach younger riders what to do in the wilderness if they needed to be alone for a while. |
