Isla Weyr (Formerly sent to New Dark Moon)
Content Warning: mention of death

Name Retela (R'ela)
Gender Male, bisexual
Age 9 @ search, currently 15
Height 5'7", short in comparison to others
Build very thin and wiry, not muscular but not weak because of it
Skin lightly tanned, no visible scars but has a burn mark on his upper leg from a candle falling on him as a child
Hair light brown, frizzy in texture and cut short into a crewcut style
Eyes dark brown, large, and often under concerned looking or judgmental heavy brows; however stern he might look on first glance, Retela's eyes are the source of many dreamy sighs among the Weyr girls, as they claim they're the color of a 'proper brown dragon'
Origin House-born, born in one of the scattered Holds near Dragonhope
Status Commoner in the hold, weyrbrat now
Family Parents are both dead from a landslide, along with one of his 6 siblings. He is the oldest of those children, the youngest perished at under 1 turn old
Literacy Very literate, can read and write with proficiency that surprises scribes
Focus Quite intense, he is often found buried in a task and resents being interrupted until he's 'done', though when that might be no one else seems to know; as a records-keeper this is a good thing, but he is quite obsessive about making sure every name, location, date, and event is recorded correctly
Values His friend Jensel is his cornerstone, they were friends in the cothold before it was destroyed, and became much closer as they grew into teens
Skills Record-keeping, literacy, and seeing the lay of the land well enough to guide others through it, Retela seeks the ins and outs of the Weyr or any location and memorizes or even draws out on his parchment a nice map. When he's told to escort visitors around Dragonhope, he can do so with ease and confidence.
Knacks As a 'nerd' with his face buried in books and scrolls all the time, early on he was picked on by kids in the hold, and had to learn to defend himself. While he doesn't go looking for trouble, Retela can hold his own even though he's as skinny and 'little' as he is. He's more of a dirty fighter than Jensel, however, and lacks discipline, so his punches might go wild.
Likes Weyr Heights, he loves being able to see for miles! He dreams of being able to fly over them, to see these peaks from the sky
Dislikes

Interruptions and distractions, he really is too focused on work, and has to be snapped out of it, which earns a bit of ire. If it's the Weyrling Master, a higher-up rider, an important crafter... he will defer to their wisdom. Anyone else? Not so much.

Also he rarely shares things he's discovered or thinks is valuable - with as large a family as he had growing up, tussling for scraps was the way of his siblings, though he generally seeks to dole out rather than take away. If a sibling grabbed from another, he would put it to rights... but that might mean simply taking whatever it was away outright for a while.

Fears The spotlight, he would much prefer to be left to his own devices, and would rather be with Jensel and maybe one or two others, than to be in a big crowd. This harkens back to the landslide, when many in his cothold were crushed, others were trampled in the rush to escape
Goals

He's read about methods to protect plants during Threadfall, and has it in his head to make sure that any given small cothold or village has access to it.

Additionally, however, he knows that as the eldest of his now-fostered siblings, he needs to set a good example. He wants to prove himself, even if the others in his family don't even know why.

Searched At the age of 9, when the cothold effectively was buried, as the dragons and riders assisted getting survivors and their goods sorted out and safe. One of the dragons picked him out of the group along with a couple others, and they came to the Weyr rather than being fostered into other local holds at a later time

If they hadn't been tucked so deeply into the Cothold's back rooms, if they hadn't been last to know about the tumbling rocks near the storage rooms. If if if. Retela dwelled on those things for many candlemarks daily shortly after the place fell to pieces. Not so much any more, but still, he would recall quite clearly when it was quiet, with nothing but the gentle snoring of his room-mate, and the faint, low-frequency groaning of the entire Weyr itself to keep him company.

Retela did have trouble sleeping sometimes. Visions of his parents, screaming with his youngest brother clutched in their embrace - they would never truly leave his mind. He'd tried writing about it, to take some of the pain away, and to an extent that worked. But he had only been nine turns old when it happened, and it left a deep emotional wound in him. Like Jensel, who had lost his grandmother - but still had his mother and father both in the Weyr. It had been those two riders, on a blue and a marked brown, that came to their rescue. It had been the blue that Searched both of them (though anyone might assume the son of riders would automatically be Searched, Retela knew better, now!) at a later visit, and it had been the brown that brought them back up to the Weyr when they were old enough to be of much more use than merely a clingy child.

They were inseparable at that point, and both placed in their temporary barracks, earning their own dorm after a time. Once up in Dragonhope's main Weyr area, they proved themselves as dependable errand runners, and Retela worked with the Scribes more often than not. He would pass information and notes off to Jensel, whose flitter could get those notes anywhere, they made a great team.

Even so, they had their own interests and duties, and attended to them eagerly enough - they then had things to talk about long into the evening. Retela's work in the records chambers had led him to start making maps and drawing up plans for things he'd spotted here and there: covers for gardens on a small scale, big roll-out mesh sheets for farms. How clever he thought those things were! He knew that the original creators of the inventions were long gone, but their work lived on at least in small portions of the Weyr's protected zone. Maybe if more of them had access to it, he figured, they'd have a bounty of goods to trade! Up here in the frozen coastline, 'bounty' was hard to come by.

Retela and Jensel stood on Dragonhope's sands when one of their greens had a small clutch, but neither of them Impressed. Disappointed, but not really so much as to become emotional (not like that one girl did, she threw such a fit!), they went back to their work until called upon again. It was more than a turn later, before that happened. And much went on between the pair to solidify them as a couple, not just friends, in that time.

When they were both told that there was a clutch available at tropical Isla Weyr, and were now on their way. Both with hope in their hearts, but realistically they knew they would both be needed in different ways if they did Impress.

A brown - the only brown to hatch actually - made his way to Retela with a desperation that caused the boy to wonder if the dragonet was about to mawl him. Such a thing had been known to happen - in the past but as the brown bounded toward him, slipping under the hopeful hands, he realized that Gereth - his Gereth - was just incredibly happy. Hungry, very hungry, yes, but when the brown butted his head into Retela's chest the boy simply grinned. “Yes, yes, food is first order of business,” he promised.

Good! Because I am quite famished...

Doubtful, Retela thought. The brown was actually quite plump and healthy but trying to explain this to Gereth was going to get him nowhere, so he simply led the brown out of the hatchling sands, following the trail of already Impressed riders and their dragons.
