Veldek was never a handsome young man, and the twisted Threadscar on his face was never going to help that. He'd sustained it in a Fall that also took his mother, and some of his cousins and friends as well. The Guild Hall's roof had collapsed under the weight of too much snow and mud the season before, and hadn't been reassembled completely before the Fall started. He was young, but not so young that he didn't remember his mother's touch, or his family's voices. They lived nearby, his father too broken by the losses to continue his profession. Veldek had always been around the guild, always loved touching the woods and seeing the detail that was possible in each item that was crafted here. So he carried the love of his family in his heart, but held on to tools directly inherited from his father. He'd also inherited a bit of a fear, the creaking wood of the structures around them as Thread bit into it, the tumbling walls - a strange deep and loud noise that would stick with him forever. He couldn't help but jump whenever something gave off a deep groan, he didn't dare step foot on a wooden dock or ship. He didn't really need to travel much, thankfully. By the time he was eighteen turns, Veldek was quite well known around the hall, his eye for detail was quite good - too good perhaps, he always fiddled with things until they were well past done. Veldek's passion for the craft was not deterred in the slightest when he was sent on his Journeyman path, for this would allow him to see and touch and use woods and items he'd never had the chance to use before. He was very excited however, when he reached Dragonhope Weyr's main hall. Commissioned to put together doors, cabinets and chairs, craft for them many different items found in every person's weyr. He worked on these things for a full year, intent on each and every room having a slightly differen theme and succeeding so well that they were about to ask him to stay on. It'd be longer than just another year, he realized, when as he was accepting this duty he was Searched! Excited beyond belief, and knowing that his tenure as a woodcrafter would help him maintain any presence he had at any weyr, Veldek insisted that he be allowed to bring his tools and work with him, when he was shipped to Sedona Weyr to stand. Besides, they would need nicely made items as well! He'd be there a while, if he Impressed at any rate. He didn't give a moment's thought to not impressing, nor to what kind of dragon he'd wind up on. They would choose, and he would work with whatever he was given. His busy hands enjoyed playing with his Journeyman's knot, which he was allowed (actually, encouraged) to keep on his clothing. Eventually he passed on the one thing that he'd kept since childhood, a little wooden wagon that had the same twisty Thread markings on it as his face did, to one of the young weyrbrats at Sedona. Maybe they'd love it, maybe they'd burn it, it only reminded him of the sick smell of death, why he'd kept it was absolutely a mystery to him. Sedona was yet a young weyr, and Veldek relished the work ahead of him! *** The weather was ... miserable. While Veldek had his fears and dark history with snowy weather it was at least something he was quite used to. Down here in the deep south... oh how hot it was. He hadn't realized that when he'd first arrived it was late spring, he was a carpenter, not a weather-man, and didn't know about the differences between north and south hemispheres. So he'd come at a time when Dragonhope was moving past Autumn, while Sedona was heading out of Spring! Now, it was dry, hot, totally outside of the young man's experience. But what he had hoped to hear finally occurred, in the evening when the sun's heat wasn't quite so bad. The humming of dragon voices filled his ears, and there was a buzzing in his head too. He'd never heard a dragon's voice in his mind before. He would, soon. Veldek was surprised at the violence early on in the hatching. The little greens clawing their way through both dragon and candidate! It made him think twice... But then, somewhere in there, an itchy, hungry, seeking dragon mind lurked. Veldek would be strong, he would stand by as the injured dragons and folk were tended to... It was quite a lot noisier here than he'd expected, and that made him a bit jumpy. A batch of five eggs hatched at once, and while the blue took his bond almost instantly, it looked as though the big brown was having trouble deciding. Veldek approached him, unsure whether he ought to be getting closer or just what. "Entith?" He said, sure that the buzzing in his mind had meaning. When the dragonet gave off a happy burbling croon in response, he knew his gut feeling was right. "Let's get you some food!" The dragon was relieved to hear that, apparently, just as another brown practically jumped on his own bond. *** Entith was a strong, good sized brown. He rivaled some of the bronzes in their stability and intelligence, while he could equally compete with the blues in terms of speed and flight agility. He was very proud of that fact, as was V'ek. The work they did together on the fields and later in the air was notworthy. Even though V'ek would continue being a crafter at Dragonhope, he was clearly well-suited to riding in difficult conditions. As a team, they were very sound indeed. Entith's quick wings and sharp eyes caught things that others might not, getting him a reward for saving a wing man in Threadfall. V'ek looked to the skies unafraid now. He knew that he still had things to learn, but back at Dragonhope he'd be sure to put everything he knew to the test. And... it would be nice and cold up there, which V'ek assured Entith he'd enjoy too! |
