Wysha stood her ground as long as she could, before her mother screamed again, and as Wysha backed away, she realized that this was the end of her stay with this woman. It was as though, after the birth of Wysha's little brother, their mother lost her mind. She was so overprotective that she risked hurting the baby, and so Wysha and her elder siblings (a brother and sister) took to distracting their mother long enough to properly care for their brother. Wysha was exhausted of this though. She loved her brothers and sister dearly, but this was just too much. Her mother's hard hands clawed at them, her shrill voice broke the silence almost every morning making demands that were normally a mother's responsibilities. Their father did nothing - he was hardly aware of these things since he was often found with the merchants making deals for the Hold. When he did come home, he was silent regarding his wife, though he praised his children well for their work with her. Their Hold overlooked a wide bay, and one afternoon shortly before her fourteenth birthday, Wysha escaped this life with a logging caravan down to the bay and onto a boat. She knew it would be very dangerous and highly risky - a young girl on a ship? But she did it anyway, knowing that if she could face down a crazed woman like her mother, she would stand up to whatever else life may bring. The ship was bound for almost every port along the shore, short-stint trading and bringing people from one place to another. They found that though Wysha didn't read and often showed her fierce streak against those above her - they would overlook those things, because she was clever and strong, and always managed to keep track of details that the usually-drunken crew could not. This saved the vessel from disasters with Holders more than once along their trip, managing to keep goods meant for one port headed to their rightful owners, rather than being bartered away at another. She learned the shore, she learned the sea, and enjoyed it. She and the ship's navigator often quarreled but not seriously - and it was reasonably clear that if not for those dragons... the pair would surely have married and had a family. At least, to hear half the crew say it! But for the dragons... Search dragons hardly ever came to ships, but in this case they were at a small port hold and happened to glance across to the docks. Wysha was Searched, but it was more than a year before she was found again and summoned to stand at Blue Mountain Aurie. There, a fine, dark brown dragon named Veth claimed her as his one - and between the two of them, they were regarded as a wild and intense pair. Wysha and Veth were sent along with several others to Dragonhope Weyr, and she delighted in the fact that it was also a port community. She was put in charge of attending the port's needs, making sure that the ships that came to dock knew the threadfall schedules and had ways to communicate with the weyr just in case they were stranded at sea with Thread. She took to reading and writing though not very well, enough to read a chart and write simple instructions. But since she knew the 'language' of the sea, they took her words more to heart than any other's. |
