Sabon Weyr (Giveaway) |
Yladir was supposed to be a jockey. Though he was tall, he was good at racing runners, good at almost everything to do with runners in fact. There was just that one ill-fated trip across the sea, when the ship they were transporting their precious runners on was hit by a massive wave and capsized. They lost the runners, in fact they lost all but a handful of the humans on the ship. Only because there were dolphins nearby, did Yladir survive at all. It was his instinct to cling onto their sleek form while they sped up to the shore of a small island, keeping his head above the water but just barely, even they could tell he was good at riding. But what could he ride if he was stranded on this isolated island? The ship's wreckage kept washing ashore, and he kept waiting for some sign that any of his family or his precious runners had survived. Nothing, nothing for weeks. And then, he and the four other survivors spotted another ship on the horizon. The dolphins had come back, this time with other humans! Yladir was silent, sullen, when they gave him new clothes he accepted them grimly. The last place he wanted to be was on another boat. The other survivors were mainly sailors, they were used to this kind of thing. But him? Yladir was a lander, he yearned for the safety of the ground, and the presence of the sleek warm runners. Thankfully no other disasters befell him, and when they hit the nearest port he was able to send information back to his home Hold about the accident. Plenty of flitters carried messages here and there, from this cold port, and up to the Weyr above it. Dragonhope, he was told, stood in those tall cliffs. It was to Dragonhope that he went first, because there was little need for his runner skills down below. They had use for transportation and communications, and any good rider was valued if they could keep the runners healthy and get where they were going on time. But he really didn't relish being a mere currier. Thankfully, when he got up to Dragonhope to seek work, he was Searched almost upon walking into the main hall. At the age of twenty turns, he was sent to Sabon Weyr and much to his surprise, impressed a fine Bronze! Rhodith and he made a great pair. For the bronze wasn't huge, he was quick in the air. He boasted constantly that perhaps he was the fastest bronze in the skies! "Well when one of those beautiful golds rises," Y'ir would laugh, "we'll see how fast you go!" |
