The world of Dragondeep is a complex nexus of different societies, where magic and technology coexist, where Dragons defeated Gods, and where a multitude of untold stories may reside. The seas provide a huge bounty for the world, they are filled with life – but also with danger. Dragons lay their eggs deep in the ocean’s trenches, and as they mature they reach the surface and finally take to the skies. This world is highly volcanic even today, as is evidenced by the massive thousand-mile-wide caldera and two-hundred-mile wide crater known collectively as the Empire of the Sulfur Shadows. Plenty of smaller underwater volcanic activity can be detected, many of those will some day become new islands or even atolls – as the world has seen a lot of explosive eruptions as well. A good number of asteroid and comet strikes have hit the world, though those are now exceptionally rare. There are numerous large islands and atolls, almost all of which are still evolving and growing. Only the biggest of the mountain ranges centered along the spine of the continent are formed by plate movement entirely, and even those in the eastern third are generally volcanic as well toward the main bulb of the land. The surface of the planet is still mostly covered in water, and in places is quite deep. The waters are saline, with plenty of elements mixed from all the volcanic activity. Many bizarre animals have evolved in the deepest oceans – not just the dragons – to feed off the warmth and nutrients pushed around in those deep-water vents. Overall, the temperature of this world is quite warm, and there is a heavy volume of rainfall across the entire planet. Only at the poles is it quite cold year round, though the peaks of each portion of the Land are always covered in snow and ice. Shipping lanes rarely close during seasonal icing, since there are effectively no landing places which would become locked during that time. The planet has a tilt allowing for reasonable seasonal changes, though since most of the landmass is centered upon the equator the only lands which truly become affected during the peak seasons are the far northern Rubies and the Blighted Crag in the south, though all areas experience some kind of seasons. Much of the world is deeply covered in forest and jungle, grassland and meadows. The quality of the woods and the types of vegetation varies strongly by altitude as well as proximity to Portals. There is a desert in one area, but it is highly unlikely to spread, as it was caused by the presence of the gigantic Sulfur Shadow volcano itself. In general this world is quite similar to Earth, in that it has an approximate circumference of 25 thousand miles, an axial tilt, a strong magnetosphere and full compliment of atmospheric and geological features. The primary differences between this world and Earth is the presence of magical powers, psionic abilities, and creatures that moved from other worlds through the Portals and Gates to populate it. Everything from plain-ordinary Humans, through furry Wyldkin, Elfin peoples, Dragons, Mages and Necromancers, as well as artificially created life in the Clockwork realm, lives here for the most part in peace. |
