The Maze of Runes |
![]() |
Though it is not considered its own province properly, the Maze supports a population of odd sea-born creatures. They are not necessarily intelligent, though they are dangerous and sly. Snake’s Gate appears to have provided the world with these people, though not the runes which give the island chain its name. Every island sports ancient pillars, walls and ruins that are of elegant if alien design, and upon all those surfaces lay exotic lettering and symbols. It is clear that the stone these are carved upon is local and not dragged across the sea or from another area. The runes themselves are ancient beyond belief, and are commonly said to have been carved from the living stone millennia ago by the Gods themselves. The Clockwork have interest in these runes, however they have often been warned away from attempting to discover their meaning by the Dragons who reside near. Most of the Maze’s isles are inhabited only by the sub-sentient folk who bear a resemblance to snakes in the same way that the dragons resemble lizards. And though the islands have been plotted out for generations, they have no names except for local terms, because there are basically no people to call them anything. Two locales however, do have well-known names: Dragonshore and Lizard Tongue Port. Situated on opposite ends of the largest of the Maze’s islands, Dragonshore often hosts fledgling Dragons as they learn the ways of flight after their long gestation in the seas. Tall cliffs and rolling hills eventually flatten down toward the east and the mainland, where Lizard Tongue Port supplies the few Humanoid residents with sporadic contact with the outside world. Generally it is the Wyldkin who visit more often than not, though the Dragons learning their wings on the other side of the island often enjoy showing off to them when they’re brave enough to journey there. |
