Necromancer's Realm - The Four Shrouds |
![]() |
Though there are more than merely four of these large islands, the main grouping of them has been put to use by the Necromancers and their ilk. As the Dragons and Gods have their resting grounds, all the other races do as well – if they’re unlucky enough to avoid burial or burning or whatever other cultural habit for the dead in their area. Heroes and villains alike have been ‘processed’ by the Necromancers, to be placed in state on these isles. They are incredibly spooky places. Only the Necromancers really understand who will go where, but the names of the isles are certainly evocative of their use. The Shoal of Skulls houses mere skeletons, from every walk of life and every breed as long as it has a bone left in its body. Drowned Path is a place of mud and mire, constant mists and fog surround the mausoleums built there, and generally those who have died on the sea but not been put to rest within the waters (an unlikely, but steady occurrence) are placed in this island. Eternal Pyre certainly does have fires burning at all times. It is said that on this otherwise barren rocky island, a flame burns for every soul who has died a brave and honorable death. If that is true, there have been plenty of heroes. Ashen Rest is a gentler place, many rulers have been put to rest here, though only those who the Necromancers have been ‘gifted’. This means that the bodies have been preserved as well as possible, and placed on display in regal poses in what appear to be imitations of their royal housing. Smokebridge is a small and unusually cheerful island of death, where wakes are held and stories are told before the dead are whisked away to their last land. Neverwake holds the bodies of criminals, and at one point had been the subject of an attempt to create a prison isle. The idea fell flat, when the first Necromancer was exiled there… The coastline along the Churnwaters and this dark island cemetery is riddled with homesteads and ports, but none thrive, and they peter out the closer to the Necromancer’s true realm they get. |
