Dahs lived a good life. Though he didn't know most of his 'parents', he had been raised by a strong-willed Peridian, a Breeder of very high standing and talent. Dahs knew that he wasn't normal - his diet, appearance and talents all pointed to him becoming a Pelatih - an Animal Master - at a young age. But he didn't choose that specific path, indeed he wanted to deal with the people involved with animals, more than anything else.

Of course, that was all well and good but he also knew a thing or two about dragons. Though his powers over animals did work on most dragons, those with high intelligence were able to fend off his manipulations.

He wanted to be a Dragon Master, really, or more than that, a Dragon Breeder. He wanted to make dragons that didn't need to be told what to do, where to go, how hard to fight. In the time he spent looking for the right dragons to breed for this goal, he met many people - and worked hard at his healing.

Though he looked quite gruff, his manner with people was absolutely charming. They were more often surprised by the fact that he didn't have a Hern Rat tail, than by the fact that he very much resembled the big quadruped. He tended injured Dragon Masters, mended wounds that were incurred on his Hunt park lands, bet on races on his race course.

Then came the day when one group of dragon-oriented folk happened upon his hunting park. They brought their dragons - or more accurately, their dragons brought them. For these Masters... Rode their dragons! Big, colorful things they were. And Dahs all but began salivating with the thought that there were more of them off world - these were self-sufficient, intelligent, and powerful creatures!

They were what he was looking for! His Sky dragons were good but moody. His Stone dragons were ... well, they were as thick headed as any. But these new dragons... They would be of much use. Now the trick would be to find ones that were compatible, enjoyed his presence, and wanted to fight Aliens as much as any other dragon!

***

Dahs's Dorel view... the cliffs above house narrow passages and plenty of ambush-worthy caverns.

And the Xeké landscape is a little more sedate, the race course is in a wide flat valley.

Dahs was stunned at the sheer beauty of the place the teleporting dragons had taken him. The island was purely the most amazing place that this land-bound Zekiran had ever seen. And far from being afraid of all the water (since Zekirans tended to sink rather than float) he knew that his time would be spent in the dragonry closer to the dormant volcano toward the middle of the island. Huge trees wove their limbs over and around buildings, everything was an inspiration to the hern-rat-spliced man.

"I think this would make a great homestead," he said of one of the visitors' centers, nestled among braided vines and lush huge leaves. It got him thinking, perhaps he could set something up over on the far eastern coast of Curra, in Zifan or Limir, where this kind of vegetation grew and he probably could locate a plant-shaper of some kind to ... Of course that would be after going home. For now, he set up in the dragonry and waited for the call to choose a hatchling.

Or perhaps it was, be chosen by. For when he and a few others were shown the newly hatched dragonets, it definitely looked as though everyone was waiting to see what happened. His senses were strongly pinging: these hatchlings might be too impressionable for him to use any powers so he backed off a bit.

At the edge of the gathering he paused, and looked into the pale white-colored eyes of a lovely dragonet. At the moment it wasn't very big, but it was darkly green in color and wobbling toward him. It was all right, he thought, because now the other dragonets were headed toward their own respective sponsors. That was a relief. While he would have loved to take home half a dozen of these lovely things, he doubted that was the plan for the others attending the hatching!

Aerlar was his name, Dahs learned shortly. He would have a penchant for earthy things, and that suited Dahs very well indeed. His hunt park in particular would be a good place for this dragon - Aerlar could patrol it from the ground or the sky, making sure that there were no poachers or injuries.
