Cathair Fionabhainn was busy recovering from the big battles they had recently had. Telis was in her element, to be sure. The fighting was not meant to include the candidates for the big Raug hatching, but it eventually swept everyone up in it. And of the people there, Telis might have been having the best time fighting instead of waiting. The wait seemed almost endless - but perhaps, she thought as the candidates were brought down hastily to the bright sands, the hatching was best left delayed like this. Their peace had cost dearly, and now was a good time to replenish the hopes and fighting strength of the Cathair. If the clutch had hatched before now, the dragonets and their new riders might have been lost. Telis stood eagerly watching the first few eggs break apart. Since she had little experience with such colorful smart dragons, Telis was very curious and surprised every time a new dragonet poked it's nose from its shell. When two dragonets broke shell together, a purplish one first and then a greenish one next, they seemed as different as night and day. The greenish one was very big, apparently this impressed some folks in the stands because they were muttering about it loudly. She looked around a bit, drying off and getting her bearings, and then stood up to choose her partner. The dragonet walked right up to Telis and boldly nosed her in the gut. Tell me of this armor, Telis. I am intrigued. Perhaps I will be large enough one day to carry amror and these things called guns. This would make you happy? Telis laughed, knowing that the dragon
would do anything if only she'd say yes. "Of course it would, Puilantranith,
I bet you'd be set up with some plates over your neck and shoulders. I
could ride right there," The telepathic communication that the dragonet offered Telis was the purest, most wonderful thing she'd ever felt. If Telis could be said to have ever loved anything - this was it, Puilantranith embodied everything she'd ever wanted. The days seemed to fly by for Telis and Puilantranith. She got bigger rapidly, but also seemed to understand more and more about the situation that she and Telis would be heading home to. So these alien things... Yes. I can scare them. I will frighten them to death! "Good girl," Telis laughed. "Now we've got to get home. High Master Engell said he's got a place for us, so I think we'll be okay. I hope we see some action." We will. I am sure of it. *** The facility was set above the mines, which had in the half dozen months since Telis' transfer been attacked not only by aliens, but by several rivals for the mines! Engell was angry that they would attempt such a thing. He was getting more out of those mines than could have been expected, and seemed to know there was more to it than just a few shiny ores. There were impurities in the stones which could be distilled, smelted into pure forms. Lightweight alloy metals - metals which Telis swore up and down were going to make great armor for the dragon she came home with. Her den above the mines was plush - it was far nicer than she'd imagined. Large, perhaps three or four Units. For a Slave or Bayaran, that was luxury beyond belief for one person and a dragon! The dragon's size of course was what prompted Engell to allow such a nice apartment to be constructed. Telis would be valuable, in many ways. So she was treated as such. Ten reminded Engell that with a dragon below her, she could travel anywhere she willed it, instantly. That was something that the High Master apparently would exploit if he could. Telis kept guard over the facility for weeks before the next incursion happened. But when it did, she and Puiantranith were right up front. Telis had a new kind of flame thrower at her side, and Puil had plates of the lightweight metal strapped to her. She shone in the sunlight - blinding the enemy with that before even getting close enough to breathe her own flames over the ship. Two large jets fell to her and Telis' flames, even before the other local dragon Masters arrived! "You're so brave!" Called out one of the miners, "I for one am glad that you're up there!" He waved, as they came in for a landing. Maybe there was more to this dragon mastery thing than met the eye after all! Telis could gloat - she could also get any partner she wished! And, with Engell having Raised her to Dragon Master in the meantime, she was now on salary and could afford things for herself. Of course, what did she want to spend it on? Armor and weapons of course! |
