Name: Janet Connalyn Origin: Shigan Weyr hatching 1 |
||
Skills / Professional Training: Janet took very easily to helping in the healer's dens, drawn toward the infirmary in order to calm those who she thought were most in need. Even as a very young child she was gifted with a touch and a simple smile, distracting an injured person while their cuts or bruises were bandaged. This did develop as she grew so the healers kept her on hand, but when their dragons started attracting her attention they insisted she train with the dragon healers too. So she has extensive knowledge of not only human-type healing techniques and psychology, but dragon anatomy and care too. She is not squeamish and can handle doing difficult tasks such as sewing a wingsail or consoling a grieving parent.
Personality: even with her empathic abilities, Janet has had to learn how to defend her mind and her own emotions from getting swept away. Thus, she sometimes seems a little chill but it's never personal (unless she tells you it is). She has seen too many partners or jilted lovers get completely out of hand, and doesn't want to go that route. She is still very close with her family, and relies on them for her mental health.
History and Events: It was possible that because Jan and J'or had moved between worlds, and in fact been born on the Old World of Pern before moving to Alskyr in the first place, that Janet's abilities grew as strong as they did. While J'or's own mind could still connect with animals and dragons to an extent, only Janet's reaches humans as well. She is well aware of how unique this is, but also aware that the leadership of Blackstone are also such people - H'lis absolutely has mental powers, but shh, don't talk about that. She would never! Being an empath has always meant that she knows when someone means ill or good, even if they are good at pretending about it. At an early age Janet had to learn how to keep her mouth shut about things, 'read the room' or in her case 'read the minds'. If a secret fell into the wrong hands, or if someone's life was to be ruined, that would always be far worse than the cheating or affairs typical among folks. Though she was searched as a child, she always knew she belonged on a dragon. Even though their mother Jan was still only barely on board with her beloved family all going into the skies or fighting Ants or ... whatever? Jan still supported them, taught them with the other Eden's Gate children until they were brought up to the top of the peak and essentially apprenticed to the dragon healers there. Janet enjoys her time with just the dragons or their pets, but steels herself every day for the inevitable mental issues that come up. From the kitchens and beast pens, to the highest weyr, there are always those who need her help, and the only way she can do this is to maintain her own sanity and health. She relies on Jerrett and he eagerly runs interference for her when needed. What will a dragon bring, though? Will a dragon Impressed to her change how her mind works? She certainly hopes not. It didn't change their father's ability, even now a decade and a half after his own impression. Maybe it would make them stronger? She likes that thought! |
