Though Clio Freemind was engineered by machines and spent the first decade of her life within the Matrix, it was clear she belonged in Zion, outside that artificial world. Though young, when she was removed from the Matrix Clio immediately came to an understanding with the leadership of the Human city: she was as much a historian as she was an adept freedom fighter.
She was placed on the Centurian at a very early age, 14, when most ships would require a few more years before allowing anyone to have a place of importance. But she learned quickly and was highly adaptable. Her skills at 'hacking' the Matrix have come in handy on numerous occasions, and her curiosity about the world around her knows no bounds.
The Centurian was not a 'pickup' ship, nor a war vessel, it served as a roaving security team both inside and out of the Matrix. The crew watched for potential Awakened in their pods, reporting incidents to their fellow captians and ships.
When Clio found out about Vere, the 'second Matrix', she was thrilled. Here were people who were voluntarily dealing with things in a way that could benefit both machines and humanity! And... dragons! Also genetically engineered, created in collaboration with the machines themselves - these massive animals serve inside Vere and outside in the real world equally.
When Clio and some few others encountered yet another group of people who had amazing abilities, they merely assumed that this bunch were from a different human city. They couldn't have been more wrong: these travellers came from another dimension entirely.
Clio was very well suited to the work of a hero - her skills in the Matrix translated into very real swordsmanship. Her self-image is so strong that in Paragon City, she can do the same amazing things that she had only been able to imagine herself doing in the Matrix. Perhaps she believes it's another code, another matrix in this dimension. Either way, she now patrols the streets of Paragon City, and rights wrongs while she learns more and more about different Earths.
