Somehow Shyyui managed to make it to the Checkerboard Ball, maybe he hitched a ride with one of the professors attending? Well that wouldn't be a surprise given his Men In Black and Verticality training, he could slip in unnoticed and lurk if he heard any signs that something was amiss, right?
It was hardly an hour into the event though, when some of the first actual dragons started coming out from their half of the venue to be shown off. Apparently this group had waited a long time for this, the proud parents were very small but they wouldn't be the smallest of the event! Not that Shyyui would make much notice of the ones coming after them. Because a shiny silver and spotted dragoness came right up to him. Bold, smart, and clearly a queen in her own right even straight out of the shell!
I am looking for someone like you, perhaps we can also find others. I would like to see this school you're fond of, you will show me, won't you?
Shocked more at the intimacy of her thoughts, than the fact that a 'queen' chose him, Shyyui gathered his wits quickly. He'd read the whole greeting pamphlet, he knew what to expect of any of these hatchlings! "You're... you're pure Pernese aren't you?"
As much as that matters, perhaps I am? I am Uusaastath, and I am yours.
He looked around, at all the different people, and people like him, realizing that not everyone was as they seemed, and that certainly included the dragons. So he nodded, and offered to help her find her first meal over at the meat stand. He might partake too! Fresh meat was always something his kitty belly appreciated!

It wasn't much more than an hour later when a hit parade of tiny and smol dragonets were brought out by their equally somewhat-tiny parents. Some of the only ones smaller than his current little queen, and oh how there were so many of them. However, he noticed Uusaastath perk up, as they came out. Something in her demeanor, not just in the ping in the back of his mind where she now rested, said there was more to the pack of new arrivals than first appeared.
He was still getting used to the mental contact, but it would only be a matter of a few hours, maybe even before the end of the party, that he'd be fully aware of how best to communicate through or to his suddenly-beloved dragon. This however was new - a feeling of yearning that he knew Uusaa had felt just before meeting him, returning to her now.
And thus, filling him with the yearning. He was hungry again, even though both the dragon and he had had their fill earlier. He'd cleaned her up, but just like his luck - and probably just the only issue tonight given how it typically played out - she immediately discovered the chocolate fondue fountain and 'accidentally' doused herself in it... It needed to be cycled through and cleaned anyway, that's what they claimed. But it was because really, don't stick your hand or head or tentacle or tail right into it please? the fondue forks are there for a reason?
Dunno what fon-doo is, but it seems messy. I suppose some people like that though.
It was another voice, clear as a bell, moving through his own mind as easily as his bond's. Distinctly male, he thought.
Then I have a king to hold court with, Uusaastath proudly purred, giving a regal (if high-pitched) trumpet to announce him as he stepped toward them out from the mass of black, white, grey, and silver dragonets. He wasn't the largest, but he seemed just perfect for the little queen after all!
They would remain at the party together, though with the connections that Shyyui was making all evening, they would show up at a variety of locations once they were grown. Perhaps they would become some kind of diplomatic team, though he was pretty sure that his bad luck curse might show up in very bad ways... maybe it was worth trying anyway!
