Scarlett 'paced' around in the mind, as the others got their turns with their dragons. She was the one they all - or almost all - mocked because she hadn't located or tried to find a dragon bond yet. It wasn't her fault, since they'd started doing this trip at all she'd hardly even had the body for herself. Not in months, she realized. She felt... dwindled. Left out. But when Serpentine came to her rescue, that was nice. Very sweet of her - she didn't really think the reptile-creature loving woman cared at all for anyone. But no - that was Scintilla. That woman was viscious and rude, mean to the core. Not all dark like Sabre, but then again ... Sabre and Scarlett would have come to blows over their use of the body. Though even Scarlett admitted: she'd have lost. Sabre was an expert assassin, and was neither afraid to die, nor unwilling to kill to get her goal met. Scarlett would never kill. Ever. That was the code, right? The way of Heroes like her. She'd been involved in a big battle where a lot of heroes were hurt, and probably killed. Like she was? She knew something happened when the battle ended, and everyone was milling about in the wreckage of the mall. Though the heroes had finally won it was at a tremendous cost. Yet here she was, inside a new body. It seemed a bit weird at first, when they were all trying out the shapeshifting and different powers. What seemed strangest to Scarlett was that Snowbird - the owner of the body - couldn't use their powers for herself. Wouldn't it follow, if they were all now 'part' of her? But that was a mystery that neither mind could fathom. They'd even spoken about it, while others were debating who would be able to do the most interesting things with their dragons or the powers they had. Summoner could victimize anyone, Scintilla could seduce. Splash was, like Scarlett, all but confined to the body - and it was a shame because their powers were so mutually exclusive. Scarlett liked Splash, but they just didn't really get along. Snowbird was so flakey but still had a good attitude. Her experiences with 'heroic powers' were a bit different than Scarlett's. Serpentine was quiet and kept to herself, but was defensive and strong willed enough to stand up to Scintilla. And Sabre... Well, it was best left in the dark, what Scarlett thought of Sabre. Yet... It was Sabre who nudged Scarlett awake and delivered a message. "We've found a place, you will like it. Follow Katana and the others." Was all the ninja said. Then she faded into the blackness of her corner of the mind. She felt the others move away, some more grudgingly than others. The body was hers, finally, so she went to the black Hathian. "Your rider said to follow you," she said to the dragon. Katana nodded and indicated that Snowbird's Kenzepten would allow her to ride him. They made the journey to Mirus as a group - and Scarlett was thrilled to be on the back of even someone else's dragon! For the first time! She flew up off the silver's back, and greeted the locals. It would take some explaining, wouldn't it... But she would finally be standing for a dragon! And some day perhaps they'd get to meet that 'guy' at Vella Crean, if it still existed. Something happened before they could reach him. Scarlett thought she had heard Summoner discussing something with him once, about splitting them up. But how would that be possible? Hardly! ... Maybe... *** Allorath had noted, but kept secret, the fact that one of the eggs had a distinctly golden sheen to it. Even if she had said anything, the Mirusans wouldn't have understood the significance, being largely unfamiliar with Old World dragons. But now this larger, golden egg cracked open, and predictably spilled a large brown-dapplied gold dragonet onto the magically heated yellow-grey sand. She was, like her two sisters before her, mostly covered in hide but with fur and feathers on her head, neck and wings, her tail terminating in the Avengaean Earth green jelly. The gems on her body glistened damply, and she shook her head imperiously. She was very much an Old World queen. Now then, lets see. It is you in control, I hope? We need to make the others respect you more. If they push you to the back, they will have to answer to me. They will listen to me, Varileath Rufasilex, the golden queen said, shaking her head as she strode over to Scarlett. Scarlett did not even have the opportunity to lead Varileath away from the Sands before the next egg, one very close to the bonded pair, broke open. Scarlett knew that this was a momentus occasion, there were things going through her mind - not just the congratulatory cheering from a couple of the others, but really her own thoughts. She would be huge, and she was already as demanding as ... well, as Scintilla on a good day! Scarlett started to laugh, chuckling at first while her new companion ate chunks of meat from a large bowl. They certainly would be able to show the world, and the others in this body, who was boss! They went home through the Nexus aided by the dragons who could teleport, Varileath was too young yet to know how to do that on her own. Scarlett felt something very cold, very scary, touching her when they traveled this time. It wasn't like that before. She briefly lost control over the Body, leaving a very startled Splash sitting with her large fin-ended torso across Kenzepten's back, and cradling still the squirming and suddenly angry Verileath in her arms. What is going on! I want my bond back! Bring her back! "Believe me," Gasped Splash who clutched on to the dragon to keep from falling, "if I could, I would, but this happens ..." She blinked and her double-lidded eyes caught sight of some spiritual creature or other that the Nexus held. "I don't like it here, I'm glad my dragon can't come here..." They re-entered reality over their new home, and immediately Kenzepten and Katana knew something was amiss. The place was ... different. Just, different. The hills maybe. But their lake was there, the house, and a road... All landmarks they knew, expected to be there. They didn't know that the world around it had changed while they were gone. *** It took over two years for her grand dragoness to mature, but it was clear from the start that she'd be big. Though not as huge as some of the record-breakers, this half-aven Earth queen could rival them for every aspect including beauty. Scarlett was proud of her dragoness, and so very happy when they got to be together. Though they'd taken to shifting every few hours to allow one or the other to have some time to the body, something had changed dramatically in the meantime. They had to slow down, one full day perhaps, for each. The dragons didn't mind that, they enjoyed the extra time. But even they noticed how tired their bond was when she appeared. It didn't take a genius to realize that Snowbird was ready to collapse. She was after all hosting seven people, not just herself. Had she aged seven times as much? Probably not, but the body... "We've got to get this done," Scarlett said while she paced in the large den. The dragons outside were sleeping, but the inside of her head was alive with the women's minds. "Sarah is dying, and if she dies, then... I think we all die." That much is obvious even to you, eh? Scintilla started, but Scarlett shut her up. "You'll have nowhere to flee, and I think ... there might even be something preventing us from actually leaving right now. Didn't you feel it on my way home?" They all knew what she meant. Summoner had been wracking her brain trying to locate information about this spirit collection in the Nexus, but the most she could come up with was the bodies of the dead riders from several dragonry worlds would be left there. It certainly hadn't felt like a friendly rider to Scarlett, nor to Splash. "I hate to say it but I think we have to really work on that plan you had, Summoner, didn't Sarah mention something about it?" She did, but she's sleeping - she spends almost all her time asleep now, and... I'm worried. That was hardly typical of her to say, but she was known for being blunt. There are other dragons, local dragons from other worlds, Scarlett. I think we should see them, ask them what they think. Verileath reminded her rider. They are not so far away that we could not reach them by morning. People are supposedly getting used to seeing dragons flying overhead. It would be right to lead a journey to somewhere she could be helped. "That's very wise, I think," Scarlett said. She let Summoner take over the body shortly, as she had some idea of where to go from there. |
