Bethany Lyle, Synesthetic Astrogation

Name Bethany Lyle
Age 17 at impression, currently 'unknown, mature adult' but with effective immortality
Species Female Human, though the story version is technically Pernese she is definitely not from there
** as a dragon rider it is implied she's also one of Vanya's children or grandkids, though it's entirely possible that it's Zekiran Vanya, the Outsider, of blue Ruarth, rather than any other (Sixth, Umpteenth, etc), though she is distinctly not his shade of brown
Bethany is...

Aged 17 turns and has been a Journeywoman Smithcrafter since her 14th turn day
Her skin is mushroom pale, as she rarely goes into the sun, her russet red hair is cut very short and flops over her forehead between her eyes, and usually has a cloth bandana around her head; her eyes might be blue or brown, but no one is sure as she rarely opens them in enough light to tell!
She is about 5'7" tall, and is slender, with attractive curves

Powers

Synaesthesia - while not necessarily a power so much as an effect of a strangely complex brain, she can use this ability to discern changes in pressure by the color of the dots dancing around, spotting extremely quiet sounds by the tingling sensation they give her fingers, or noting the biological issues that someone may have just by their smell or the way their voice tastes. She has always had this mixed up atypical sensory ability, but her senses are also all quite strong and refined, anywhere between 2 and 4 times stronger than a normal human's. So what might be half a pindrop of a sound to a normal person, she can see it blaringly as an echoing series of rings in her vision.

Strong Empathy - perhaps because her senses are as complicated as that, she has always been more aware of the moods and whim of those around her, and when bonding to her dragon Neuroth, this became even more important. She is not necessarily an 'actively able to change emotions' empath, but she can read the room just by sniffing the mental air.

Clusters

Synaesthetic Navigation +5 An odd profession for someone that a lot of folks don't even realize can see let alone see well enough to perform the difficult tasks of navigating a starship. However that is her profession, regardless of the odd Pernese background she has. A member of an astrogation guild in her 'true' incarnation, it requires the use of senses that most humans and a signifcant number of non-human pilots lack entirely. She's looking forward to trying to find new places to take both her dragon and her ships, particularly with the Far Far Galaxy having strong representation now... The entire upshot of this skill set is that she can feel her way around computers and charts with greater ease than most who have ever tried, and when she makes a star chart you can rely on that with absolute confidence!

Cybernetics +4 Though not shown on the full size image above, the inset which is found on the Instructors page has her cybernetic enhancements in view. As a Pernese character she lacked these, but in this modern era they're back! She can plug directly into a computer which has biological export capabilities, which is what all the ships she's piloted use. Under some conditions, the ports that are installed that just-barely touch her brain might disrupt any other abilities (thanks, Zekiran dad). But thanks to her being human and not 'other', her synaesthetic brain can take the vast amount of raw data and organize it into things that her hands then type... Or the other way around. She can also display her visual, aural, and to a small degree her balance and heat sensing to other normal people by using a holographic or VR simulator, directly outputting to the screens or imagery.

Skills

Starships Are Fun! +5 Engineering tasks and repairs are easy when you can smell a broken fuse or taste the results of a locked mechanism. Though she isn't a techno-mage or cyber-shaper, when she runs her bare fingers over a ship's conduit she can tell where things are, whether they're working right, or if there are breaks needing attention. And she knows just what tools to use for fixing all of it!

Dragon Riding +3 Even if she was wearing her sash and blindfold when she impressed Neuroth, she could see perfectly well. Her sense of balance and ability to cling on to the large dragon's shoulders is well known, and though she doesn't instruct courses, she uses some of the theories for dealing with moving vehicles or starship motion. Also obviously she's well accustomed to the care and lifestyle of her dragon, and can offer help to students if they've found themselves searched for a dragon clutch.

Quickly Assess An Area +3 she doesn't even need to be in a room to know its dimensions or what else might be in it, the sounds or textures, heat signatures, pressure waves, all the various noise that she interprets have shown her how to navigate it. The only time this won't really work is if there's a lot of noise or people, bright lights, or distractions such as klaxons and panic... But she can describe where to step when someone needs help, from outside a room.

Knacks

Fashion With A Side Of Soft +/- 3 Her skin is remarkably sensitive, and she can taste bumps and textures a little too well sometimes leaving a weirdly bitter metallic tang in her ears. So things that she wears need to be comfortable. It's one thing that she and Monica Kuyul have in common - and the two of them have gone shopping for gear together for that reason! She does have to wear darker glasses, ear plugs, and soft gloves most of the time, particularly on campus, but she has been known to remove them in private settings where it's dim, quiet, and there aren't any sharply piercing banana smells...

Multidimensional +3 She has distinct memories of Pern, the Old World, Alskyr, and deep space all at once. It's possible that the version of this woman that instructs here at Carramba is a mashup of all of them, due to moving with Neuroth from one dimension into another? Similar to Mandragora, Siren, and Ambrosia, she has features and memories as well as history on numerous dimensions equally. People from Alabaster Weyrhold recognize her as do those from space, Zekira, and probably other realms. Probably due to this she seems attractive to those who are 'weirdness magnets' themselves, such as the Color Guard... She's able to keep all of this straight somehow.

Can Describe Everything Normally Too +3 all her life she's needed to, so early on she learned the right words, and gets immeasurable pleasure from describing what she actually senses to people once they understand.

Without needing to knock, the girl in the weyr calls you inside.

"Come on in, please don't bother knocking or clapping at my door... The sound is too much!"

Her voice is clear, but quiet. You look in, and present your Harper's badge. "I'm here to ask you about yourself, for the weyr records."

"Certainly, could you keep your voice down please?" She indicates a chair, and you notice that her hands have thin gloves on them, and her eyes are covered by a thin silken ribbon. Before you can even take a breath to ask her about this, she smiles.

"As you can see, I'm a bit oddly dressed... It's because my senses are, well, all mixed up. I can feel sounds, and I can see tastes."

"Wh-what?" You ask, taken aback at such an odd affliction. "Is this temporary?"

"No, no," she shakes her head, and you can see that her ears are given to small plugs. "I've been this way all my life. I can detect just enough of something that I understand what You might mean by 'red' or 'banana' or 'bumpy'." She smiles. "What I 'see' as red you might call harp-string-notes. What I taste when I eat a banana you'd see a bunch of orangey-red triangle shapes. See how easy it is?"

You pick at your teeth, unsure of how to interpret this.

"I've been told that if I Impress a dragon, perhaps these things will tone down, will make more sense. I've been perfectly happy with the way I see and hear, but the real problem I have is that I can hear and feel and see VERY well. Much better than the best, I'm afraid. So the tinest sounds might seem very thick-- sorry, very loud to me."

"I can see where you have trouble translating for yourself," you say, and then you realize that she can see you through that silken bandana. You stop picking your teeth. It was rude!

"Well, what do you want to know?" She asks, her voice is sweet, and she seems very patient. It seems as though she's had to explain her situation many times before.

"Well, the usual things. Your name, parentage, craft if you have one, age..."

"Ah, those usual things. Yes. I'm Bethany Lyle, of the Lyle Traveling Tinkers. I'm a Journeywoman Smithcrafter, like a couple other people in the weyr I've met recently. But I work with very small things, like my glasses, over there." She waves at a table which has a number of small lenses, wire frames, and such. "I've never seen too many people with glasses, but I know that my vision is too sharp for sunlight. Even in here, I prefer to wear my cloth, but the lenses I've had made by an interesting little man named Shim'a of Alabaster Weyrhold will fit right in there. His vision is too acute for daylight flying too, and his dragon's are too!" She laughs, "I wonder if I might find a dragon as confused as my own brain is!?"

She laughs again, and then continues. "I'm 17 Turns old, I realize that seems a bit young to be a Journeywoman, but I've been told I'm extremely smart. My father was... Well, he was not a Lyle. My mother is Leahra Lyle, a crafts master with tools and mechanics. I think that's why my father liked her so much. They had much in common, but I've rarely seen him. He rode a blue dragon but had a craft too."

"Rode? Is he gone?"

"Gone, yes, but I believe not dead. I think he's traveled between times, perhaps by accident. I ... plan on finding him."

This admission brings your heart back to your throat. "That's very dangerous, young lady," you tell her. "He probably went by accident."

"Then perhaps I'll have to reproduce that accident. If I impress, I shall devote whatever energy I can to the Weyr, but I must find my father."

She seems to be done with the interview, and smiling, she offers you a cup of klah as you exit.

**

Bethany came off the sands with a slight frown. Perhaps it was just not to be. She was dejected, like most of the girls at any hatching. She didn't get a the gold from the clutch, but like only few others, she hadn't Impressed a green either.

The disappointment showed on her face, and she put her ribbon more loosely around her face, took her dark shaded glasses and placed them on her short nose.

Almost everyone had gone from the sands. It was just not worth waiting to see the sad candidates be taken away and consoled.

She hung at the edge of the sands, watching the colors and sounds in the only way she could. People's voices rang in shades of green and lavender, with shapes of color like harpsichord icecream dots dancing after them. Bethany sighed.

"Probably no dragon out there wants a freak like me..." She allowed herself to feel this way. After all, she did have a unique problem of mixing her senses. What use would that be in Threadfall?

It will be good to see things that others cannot, Bethany, so you may not cry any longer. I am here.

She choked. Something very odd had entered her mind. She had only once felt this before, the touch of a dragon! It was different this time, though. Slick and smooth and careful. Not jagged around the edges like the search dragon had been.

When she turned to look, with her eyes still covered with the sash and her glasses, what she met was a shape of deep reddish brown. Eyes met her own, and quickly went from their first red and orange into a pleased blue.

You and I will find a way, my friend.

"But... how? And what is your name? I ... You already know mine!"

I am Neuroth. I felt you long ago. But I was hidden in the sands. No one noticed that my egg had hatched and I did not want you to burn your hands and feet on the sand. It is very hot. And I can feel your colors and shapes. I like them! You will have to show me what 'music' tastes like!

Bethany laughed, and threw her arms around her new dragon!

Dragon

Name: Neuroth
Gender: Male
Size/Shoulder/Length: Large Brown Pernese, 14' s / 60' l / 100' ws
Colors: body brightly red graded to crimson at head and tail tip; wingsails pinkish; neck ridge and tail spade very red; eyes faceted change
Features: Gallimim Pernese, as shown
Powers: Winged Flight, stable and somewhat slow in flight, but durable to a degree that is impressive even at his size. He can keep up a 30+ mph speed ("low and slow") for hours, and a 90+ mph sprint that lasts at least an hour. He is able to throw his weight around, and while he does require a larger amount of space to do anything, he can turn like nobody's business, and has never been known to spill his rider as she reads his mind as well as body in order to flow with him rather than unexpectedly against
Teleportation - local, nexus, time - Neuroth's teleportation locally is not really limited, but he was never intended for threadfighting and as such only developed a sort of deliberate and sensible 'where do I want to go' method. He is quite precise, however, and can come out over exactly the right treetop even if that tree is in a blizzard at the time. Speaking of time, he is markedly good at time travel, but also paired with the Nexus dimensionality, genrehopping with ease allowing him to move 'just a few hours into the past', somewhere or somewhen, with the same bullseye accuracy as his normal teleport. None of this seems to wear him out, in any way, and he is who you want to be leading your multidimensional travel if you're in a tour group...
Telepathy, his mind is sure and polite to other people, but for Bethany he is her brilliant worrystone of thought. While other minds might cause her to wince, his is as smooth and gentle as it is strong and lasting - and after meeting several people from the Rookery, Bethany can liken his mind to being Melissa-like, she calls it that, in that it is more than a nest or burrow, it's a sanctuary that she can use to protect herself if there are too many telepaths wanting attention from her
Dragon Control* Not typically present in males nor in this specific origin but with the way his rider must do things, he's had to take command of annoying or noisy dragons here and there, and has since become quite good at organizing them or getting them to do what he needs at a reasonable distance
Firebreath* Unassisted having been moved around the Nexus as much as he has, Neuroth's ability to breathe flame can be done at will. However since he isn't due to fight thread any time, and is more of a scout and travel agent, he's only ever used it to bring attention to his location, or crisp-fry something too big for the party to handle on that one excursion
Parentage: Unknown, currently Progenitor since there is no record of his existence, and it's likely that he was created at the same time as Chvehath as a custom adopt
Origin: Gallimim Weyr 2001
Other Info: Neuroth is going to be interested in some kind of mating flight sooner or later. He's waited long enough.
