With the success of the first fifteen cloned girls sent off to Carramba High School, GLaDOS sorted through her stores of acquired DNA and decided to 'try harder' this time. Some strange folks contributed to the new sets of genes available to her, and some old-favorites as well. With those and a better mix-and-match strategy, she tried her hand at boys with the same kind of vigor as she'd done before.
To say that she went a bit overboard was putting it mildly, but then again, her world needed these men as badly as it needed the girls before them. There would be more, the ridiculous collections she'd put together after the Girls got back their first Summer saw to that. For now, she decided to fill out those ranks in the same fashion she'd started with the colorful females.
Since new skills were needed, a wider variety of more specific issues were on a checklist for this batch. The donors, this time, did know of their participation and did so voluntarily rather than with the first group's genes. The influx of the newer DNA was added to the existing pool. The boys personality traits as well as some marked skills and powers can be traced directly to their 'new donors', though the basic idea of 'being a telepath is advantageous' is still strongly present in this batch and most of them have what equate to 'strong Vortal signatures' akin to the first.
Also strongly present, enough though he only actively participated with this group to a small extent, are those mysterious 'not quite human' genes found from Keenan Lane. Though GLaDOS is not entirely certain, she thinks that this mysterious 'g-man' isn't actually the same one who was used to create the first Girls. (He isn't: there are plenty of different versions of so many people who can be found in Carramba, he himself has had to apologize to the Gordon Freeman that wound up there and in the new gene mix, because of the actions that one's 'version' did...) However it's clear that this time, he has taken a much more direct interest in how the project will run. Perhaps because on numerous versions of Lane's 'protected' Earths, including Paragon Earth where ARRISA originally encountered him, his family is far more important to him personally, and under his steady turquoise gaze.
For that reason, among this batch of boys, Turquoise is considered their 'leader', though he and Sulfur often are seen as both opposing ends of leadership and quietly at each other's throats for it. Sulfur will not openly challenge Turquoise, but certainly his own 'sires' background and history contribute to their friction; Turquoise takes his role very seriously but also accepts advice from his 'father' about how to let others do their jobs. It's fairly clear that Lane sees this as the experiment it is, and is willing to let his children and their 'kin' make their own mistakes, but not to the detriment of the entire group.
To say that most of this and the subsequent groups are 'ridiculously good' at things is a grand understatement. They're all uniformly intelligent, strong willed, and capable individuals. Though this group of boys knows they weren't created first, they mesh extremely well with their counterparts. If Turquoise has a 'right hand man', it's in the form of Carnelian: tremendously well-organized and 'hip as hell'.
The flip side of them, however, must be Absinthe and Crocus. While neither of them could possibly be considered goof offs, they take their roles as 'social coordinators' 'seriously' (yes, that's in quotes). Absinthe does indeed tend to enjoy himself quite a bit, but never hesitates to share. This is to the utter dismay of his 'primary siblings' Sulfur and Beryl by the way. Crocus is faintly more sedate but also faintly more conscious. Awake conscious, that is. Usually while Absinthe is sleeping it off, Madder likes to come around and play dress-up dolls on him. He always appreciates the effort, honestly, because there has hardly been a time when Madder's idea of 'you should try this on' has failed to impress.
Though it's no surprise that he enjoys explosives and demolitions as much as his 'mother' Mars Walsh, Malachite is often dismayed at the fact that Absinthe's brews have no effect on him. He's a bit more calm and less twitchy than she is, but that's not saying he's not a fidgeter. Whenever he has 'a plan' for something, he consults with Russet about setting off the fireworks. The fire-shaper Russet takes reasonable precautions when they do so around their siblings or anyone they want to keep safe, but woe to any spare monster, zombie or Combine that gets into their explosive traps. Bronze is the one they both defer to when they know they'll need more than a couple steps in their operations; he is responsible for a lot of the less explosive and more cerebral traps and deceptive coloring on buildings that the group employs in the field.
Similar to their female predecessors, several of this group concentrate on creation and maintenance of weapons, tools, and machinery. Tto a smaller extent Bronze overlaps in this regard, but his expertise is in a different direction than Umber and Copper. Copper handles a lot of outdoorsy work, preferring to be outside or at least working on large projects like power plants and safety walls. Umber is definitely his father's son - Gordon Freeman's abilities with melee and improvised weapons certainly shines in this 'son' of his, and if Copper has something to put into testing, Umber is on it in a minute. Though he's less of an inventor and more of a repair-focused guy, Chestnut shows promise in how well he handles any given vehicle and can get whatever is needed, where it is best used, almost instantly. Radios and robots are part and parcel for Ochre, but his favored activities include musical entertainment. He'd much rather jam to some tunes with his brother Crocus than squirm around in dirty ruins.
The need for health and medicine certainly will never vanish, and Viridian heads up a small contingent of dragon-riding healers. As the son of Baeris Kshau, he was obviously expected to become a leader of sorts but his skills are far more geared toward exotic wildlife than human healing. That's not saying he doesn't know his way around a hospital. However, it's Topaz that does far more Human (and Vortigaunt) healing than his green shaded companion. Topaz's propensity to hit on everyone that comes his direction for the slightest healing can be explained away pretty quickly once you know his mother is Melissa Larrabie.
